UK airline scraps Caribbean flights

- Caribbean360.com : "LONDON, United Kingdom, August 28, 2008 - XL Airways has scrapped all its Caribbean routes, blaming rising fuel costs and a slowdown in the United Kingdom (UK) economy for the move. XL, a leading UK scheduled and charter airline, said that by November 3 it will end services to St Lucia, Barbados, Tobago, St Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Grenada. This means that St Kitts will have no direct flight from Europe and the country's Minister of State with responsibility for Tourism, Ricky Skerrit was quoted on SKNVibes as saying that the XL cuts could result in a total loss about 7,000 passengers to St Kitts every year, including over 4,000 British tourists and hundreds of UK-based Kittitians and Nevisians."

Travel Slump Has an Upside: Deals on Hotels

WSJ.com : "Some resort companies are targeting airfare increases directly. Sandals, a chain of 12 all-inclusive resorts for couples in the Caribbean, just announced a 'fly-free' offer with an airfare credit of up to $550 per person for trips booked by Oct. 23. So far this year, Sandals has seen record occupancy, says Kevin Froemming, president of Unique Vacations, the company's sales and marketing arm. But because Sandals caters largely to honeymooners, most bookings are locked in many months in advance, he says, and starting around June and July, he says he saw 'a definite shift in people holding on to their money more,' with advanced bookings falling about 10% from last year. Elite Island Resorts, which also has properties across the Caribbean, announced this week a promotion that guarantees round-trip airfare of $299 on AMR Corp.'s American Airlines flights to Elite's properties in Antigua."

Caribbean dangers still slight

Telegraph : "But at the same time, it’s important to remember that very few of those involved holidaymakers. More than 22 million tourists and a further 20 million cruise ship passengers visit the Caribbean every year, almost all of them without incident. I have travelled extensively in the Caribbean, and while I haven’t always found it as friendly as it’s painted – service is often surly and I’ve yet to meet anyone remotely helpful at Antigua airport – I’ve never encountered any crime or felt threatened. Granted, I’m careful where I go and what I do. It’s vital to understand that the Caribbean, for all its palm-fringed beaches and fabulous climate, has never been the earthly paradise that the all-inclusive, gated resorts have perhaps lulled us into thinking it is. Why would they be gated if not to keep guests safe?"
